The float tank usually holds about 1 gallon of water. It will be replenished when the float valve drops below a certain level. The float tank should have a top and a discharge filter to prevent debris from entering the pressure washer system. If debris does clog the outlet preventing water from getting to the system, the vacuum switch can be defeated, and cause the burner to ignite without water flow, and a steam explosion may occur.
